Building a home NAS

Nowadays the needs of entertainment is seems to becoming a new trend. If you had a computer, an LCD TV then you install XBMC live and plug it via HDMI, whalaah..you had an HTPC on your house.

I’ve been building an HTPC platform using an Nvidia-ION platform base with a damage cost near IDR 3.5 million and installing XBMC Live (Ubuntu 9.10 base OS) in 4GB USB flashdisk, and the output for entertainment is worth the price.

Since my movie collection take space from 4GB up to 10GB, a small 3.5″  500GB SATA disk may not be adequate in the future and reconstruct the HTPC in the future is not an option.

Hence i start thinking of building a small simple home NAS. Here is the DC calculation in IDR currency

=======================================================

Intel D945GCLF2                                           Rp.680.000
V-GEN 512Mb PC 4200                               Rp. 98.000
Libera Cube Scuderia 75W                         Rp.311.000

w/o disk                                                             Rp.1.096.000
w 1 disk 1 TB WDC @Rp918.000             Rp.2.014.000,-
W 1 disk 1.5 TB WDC1.196.000,-             Rp.2.292.000,-
w 2 disk 1.5 TB                                                 Rp.3.488.000,-

Opsional
USB stick 4gb                                                    Rp.100.000
USB wifi adapter TP-link                              Rp.100.000
TP-link8 port 10/100 switch + 1GB        Rp.402.000

=====================================================

As you see, building the do-it-yourself NAS without the disk is even cheaper (think that you want to expand up to four to six disk on the platform is just by adding a RAID/SATA PCI card) from the cheapest NAS available in the market (Dlink DNS 323) of course there’s a plus-minus on both platform.

What you can get from your DIY NAS is, you can install FreeBSD 8.0 with ZFS on it. 😀

So if my internal ministry of finance approve the proposal it would be a nice project next month. 😀
